All keys lost

Every key gone, and no spare

It is the call drivers dread making: the only key is lost, stolen or at the bottom of the bay, and there is no spare in a drawer at home. A new key can usually be made from nothing, at the car.

Made at the car, not at a dealer

A key is cut to the car’s own lock and its chip or remote is programmed to the car on the spot, where it is parked — your driveway, the street, a work car park. For most cars that means no tow, and no wait for a dealer appointment.

Whether that is possible for your car depends on the make, model and year. Tell us those three things when you call or ask for a price and we can say straight away, before anyone comes out.

What we ask to see

Making a key for a car with no key at all is exactly what a thief would ask for, so we ask you to show that the car is yours: photo ID, and the registration papers or something else that ties you to the vehicle.

Once a new key is programmed, the lost one can be taken off the car where the car allows it, so it no longer starts the engine if somebody finds it.

If you think the key was stolen rather than lost, report it to Victoria Police as well — the Police Assistance Line is 131 444 — and tell us when you book.

Common questions

Can you make a key if I have no key at all?

For most cars, yes — a key can be cut to the lock and programmed to the car with no original to copy. A few makes and model years need parts that only the maker supplies; tell us the make, model and year and we say which yours is before anyone comes out.

Do I need to tow the car anywhere?

For most cars, no. The key is cut and programmed where the car is parked.

How do I know the price before you come?

Ask for a price on this page or call. You have the price before you book, and nothing extra is charged unless you agree to it first.

Answer what you can — anything you are unsure of, leave it. Your locksmith reads it and comes back with a price, usually within the hour during business hours.

Stuck right now? Ring — it is faster than any form. If it can wait, the form below gets you an exact figure.

Which car is it?

Not sure of the year? It is on the registration papers, and on the plate inside the driver’s door frame.

It decides whether we can get to you — better to know now than after you have written the rest.

What sort of key does it use?

Not sure? Pick "I’m not sure" — your locksmith will identify it.

Cutting a spare from an existing key is a different job to starting with none.

So we can call you back with a firm price.

Optional — but it is how we send you the price, with a button to accept it and pick a time. Without it we have to ring you.

Optional — but the more we know, the more accurate the price.

Optional, and the single thing most likely to get you a firm price without anyone coming out. The car, the door or window you’re locked out of, and the key if you still have it.
