Remotes and fobs
Buttons that do nothing
The remote no longer locks the car, a replacement fob has arrived and needs pairing, or the car has stopped recognising its key. Most of these are fixed by programming at the car, with no trip to a dealer.

Battery first
A remote that has stopped working is often a flat battery, and that is worth trying before anything else. If a new battery does not bring it back, the remote has usually lost its pairing to the car or failed inside.
Pairing and replacement
A remote that has dropped its pairing is programmed back to the car. One that has failed is replaced with a new key or fob, cut where it has a blade and programmed to the car on the spot.
If you have bought a fob yourself, tell us the make, model and year and where it came from: some aftermarket fobs cannot be programmed to some cars, and it is better to know before anyone comes out.

Common questions
Can you program a remote I bought online?
Often, but not always — it depends on the fob and the car. Tell us both before booking and we say whether it can be paired.
The car will not start with my key. Is that programming?
It can be. If the car no longer recognises the key’s chip, reprogramming usually brings it back. Ask for a price and choose the job that matches what the car is doing.
