Rekeying alters the internals of a lock so old keys no longer work and a new one does. The lock stays on the door, which is why it usually costs less than replacing it.

The moving-in job nobody thinks about

When you buy or rent a home you have no idea how many keys are out there. The previous owners, their family, a cleaner, a tradesperson, the neighbour who watered the plants — any of those keys still opens your front door.

Rekeying is a small job that closes all of that off in an afternoon, and it’s the single most worthwhile thing most people can do in their first week in a new place.

If your front, back and garage doors all take different keys, they can usually be rekeyed to take the same one. It’s a small change that you notice every day.

Is rekeying as secure as a new lock?

For a lock in good condition, yes — the mechanism that resists attack is unchanged, and only the combination that opens it changes. If the lock itself is worn or damaged, replacing it is the better answer and we’ll say so.

How many locks can be keyed alike?

Usually every lock in a house, as long as they’re a compatible type. We’ll check on site and tell you before starting.
