A latch holds a door shut. A deadlock keeps it shut. On most homes it’s the upgrade with the largest gap between what it costs and what it achieves.

Why a latch on its own isn’t enough

A spring latch can be worked back, and the whole assembly relies on a small amount of timber around the strike. It’s designed for convenience, not resistance.

A deadbolt throws a solid bar into the frame. There is nothing to slip and nothing to spring back, and getting past it means attacking the door or the frame — which is loud, slow and visible.

Fitting is most of the job

A deadlock that isn’t seated properly, or whose strike doesn’t line up, gives you the appearance of security and not much else. The bolt needs to throw fully into a strike anchored to the frame, not just the architrave.

That’s the part that takes the time, and it’s the part that decides whether the lock is worth having.

Fire safety and double-cylinder locks

A double-cylinder deadlock needs a key from the inside too, which stops someone reaching through broken glass — but it also means you need a key to get out.

That trade-off matters in a fire. We’ll talk through where the key lives before fitting one, because the safest choice depends on your household.

Can a deadlock go on any door?

Most timber and aluminium doors take one. Doors that are mostly glass, or very thin, sometimes need a different approach — tell us what the door is made of when you check a price and we’ll match it.

Will it damage my door?

Fitting a deadlock means cutting into the door and frame, which is normal and permanent. Done properly it looks like it was always there.
